Firstly, this method is not at all common—at least not among the participants of the SQL tuning workshop which I have been conducting for some time. Up to now I have never found anyone who previously knew of this method, although there were enough experienced specialists among the participants. Secondly, this method cannot be quickly understood. I had to use a lot of examples and exercises in order to teach the others formal SQL tuning. Thirdly, this method proved to be very efficient. I have to admit that I prefer manual SQL tuning and don’t use Oracle’s automatic method. Instead, I have been applying the above-mentioned method for years now, always with success. Some of the workshop participants have said that this method has also been of benefit to them. I have been pleased to hear that it helps them to analyze and solve performance problems quickly.
