Professor Igor Boeltza's "Handbook of Soviet Music" is a compendious up-to-date survey of Soviet concert, operatic, and ballet music. Forty Soviet composers are dealt with indidually. This is less than 10 per cent. of the total membership of the Union of Soviet omposers. Nevertheless in this selection are includede exapmles of all the diverse types of composers who are hard at work in the U.S.S.R., producing a vast mass of music.
