Roberts N. Blackbeard and Other Pirates of the Atlantic Coast
J.F. Blair, 1993. — 214 p. — ISBN: 978-0-89587-098-8.
This book is not intended to take the place of an academic treatise, but I have spent weeks researching at the Library of Congress, making phone calls to libraries eliciting their cooperation, and visiting cities or islands frequented by pirates the length of the Atlantic coast from Portland, Maine; Portsmouth, New Hampshire; Boston, Massachusetts; and Provincetown, Massachusetts, on Cape Cod — where the relics of Samuel Bellamy’s Whydah are on display — to such well-known pirate haunts as Beaufort, Bath and Ocracoke, North Carolina, as well as Charleston, South Carolina, and St. Augustine, Florida.
I am most grateful not only for the cooperation of libraries, but for historical societies and individuals. Thanks are also due my husband, Jim Brown, who participated in some of the research and was wonderfully tolerant during my periods of occasional frustration.
The stories in this book are designed to draw the most authentic pictures possible of the adventurers who lived such dangerous, violent lives. Quotes of what was actually said, as they have come down to us, have been merged with conversations one can imagine taking place to link the historic events in these people’s lives.
May you find these men and women pirates as fascinating as I have!
