This manual is a guide to the development of aninstructional program in English for Specific Purposes (ESP). Step-by-step procedures for assessing student needs, settingachievable goals, designing a program, and selecting appropriatematerials and activities for the classroom are outlined. The fourlanguage skills (listening, reading, speaking, and writing) aredescribed and suggestions for teaching these skills and grammar andstudy skills are provided. General guidelines for program andclassroom management are also presented. A special section addressesthe needs of students who are preparing to study abroad, and aresource section reviews materials available to Peace Corps ESPteachers and gives directions for ordering them from the Peace Corps Information Collection and Exchange. The manual is not an exhaustivereview of techniques and approaches to teaching English as a secondlanguage (ESL), but focuses on the ways in which an ESL programshould be structured for the teaching of ESP.
