Considerations about the space of residence concern both the architecture of a traditional home on the Polish-Belarusian borderland and its relation to beliefs of local Orthodox communities.
Located in the north-eastern part of Poland, the Podlasie voivodeship is one of the most ethnically, culturally and religiously diverse regions in the country. Elements of various nationalities are present here: Polish, Belarusian, Ukrainian as well as historically local and immigrant cultures (Roman-Byzantine), and are not mutually exclusive, but on the contrary – they unify, creating a common borderland culture. This diversity is evident both in the material sphere – with a settlement system preserved from the 16th century in an almost unchanged state, or wooden houses architecture with decorative forms unparalleled anywhere else in the country, as well as spiritual aspects: rituals and customs of local communities passed down from generation to generation have become a system of values, and at the same time an identifier of an ethnic group.
