Great masters, such as Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven, had attracted a large circle of capable and talented musicians. One of these was Diabelli. In his younger years, he had been a popular piano teacher, and later entered upon an active and successful career as a music publisher. Czerny, as well as all the notable musical celebrities of his day, were frequent visitors at the Diabelli establishment, and this firm was the first to publish the works of Franz Schubert and Strauss, the famous waltz king.
Diabelli’s own compositions, though very numerous, are practically obsolete with exception of certain instructive piano works, which are still excellently adapted for the needs of younger piano students.
Aus der Einleitung: Vor hundert Jahren war Wien, die Hauptstadt „an der schönen, blauen Don au,“ der Mittelpunkt der musikalischen Welt. Um die grossen Meister Haydn, Mozart und Beethoven scharte sich ein Kreis tüchtiger Talente. Zu ihnen gehörte Diabelli. In seinen jüngeren Jahren war er ein bekannter Klavierlehrer. Später leitete er mit grossem Erfolge einen Musikalienverlag. Czerny war ein täglicher Besucher; all die musikalischen Grössen gingen bei ihm ein und aus. Die Firma hat u.a. die Werke Schuberts und des Walzerkönigs Strauss verlegt.
