From naxos.com: Carl Reinecke (1824-1910). Nowadays Carl Reinecke is remembered in musical circles for his cadenzas to the concertos of Bach, Mozart and Beethoven, while a wider public may perhaps know the flute sonata Undine, yet in the second half of the nineteenth century he was respected as one of the most influential and versatile musicians of the time, and as one of the most highly esteemed composers.
From britannica.com: Carl Reinecke...(1824-1910) [was a] German pianist, composer, conductor, and teacher who sought, in his works and teaching, to preserve the Classical tradition in the late 19th century... He was one of the most influential musicians of his time, counting among his students Edvard Grieg, Hugo Riemann, Arthur Sullivan, and Felix Weingartner. He wrote works for orchestra (symphonies, overtures, concertos), piano, and voice, as well as chamber music and works for the stage.
CouranteThe Courante, Corrente is a dance of lively character in triple time and begins on the unaccented part of the bar.
In Bach we find Courantes in ³⁄₂, ⁶⁄₄, ¾ and ⅜ time.2 BourréesThe Bourrée is an old French dance of cheerful character in ⁴⁄₄ time, beginning with a crotchet on the upbeat, similar to the Gavotte, which must have, however, two crotchets on the upbeat.
In Bach we find the Bourrée also in ⁶⁄₄ time.LoureThe Loure is in triple time and requires a beginning" on the upbeat. The tempo is moderate.Gavotte & MusetteThe Gavotte is a French dance in Alla Breve time (²⁄₂) beginning at the half bar on the upbeat; it is formed of groups of two 2-bar phrases, for the most part.
We frequently find a Musette added, which gets its name from the French term for bagpipe. In conformity with this, it is a characteristic of the Musette that it is written on a “drone bass.”SarabandeThe Sarabande comes from Spain, and is of a serious, solemn character, in ¾ time, and always begins with a complete bar.RigaudonThe Rigaudon is an animated Provençal dance, in Alla Breve time, beginning on the upbeat.AllemandeThe Allemande, as its name implies, comes from Germany. It is in ⁴⁄₄ time, beginning mostly with a short note towards the end of the upbeat, and is of serious character.2 PassepiedsThis dance, which is of cheerful character, comes from Brittany. It is written only in triple time (mostly in ⅜) and bears a resemblance to the Minuet.FarandoleThe Farandole is a Provençal round dance of a lively kind in duple rhythm.GigueThe Gigue (Italian, Giga) is an old dance form in ⅜ or ⁶⁄₈ time, usually written in free fugal style. In the second part the subject is frequently inverted.PavaneThe Favane (also Paduana) is an old Italian dance - coming from Padua - in duple time, and of quiet stately movement.MenuettThe Minuet is an old French dance-form in triple time, of moderate tempo, and its character is essentially graceful and elegant.PolonaiseThe Polonaise, as its name clearly enough tells, is a Polish dance in ¾ time, and in tempo of quiet movement, for the Polonaise is more a kind of March than a dance.
A characteristic feature is the cadence (close) on the third crotchet, as also the rhythm of the accompaniment with its two semiquavers on the second quaver.WalzerA round-dance in triple time; a distinction is made between the slow waltz and the quick waltz.PolkaThe Polka is a round-dance in rather quick tempo, which originated in Bohemia in the year 1830.MazurkaThe Mazurka, or Masurek, is a Polish national dance in triple time. The accent falls principally on the second crotchet. It is of a chivalrous character.GaloppThe Galop (Galopade) is a modern, very quick round dance in ²⁄₄ time.LändlerThe Ländler is similar in tempo to the slow waltz, and like the latter is always in triple time.RheinländerA modern round-dance in alternately moderate and quicker tempo, in duple time.QuadrilleFrench square dance.
