Simmons Ernest. English Literature and Culture in Russia, 1553-1840
New York: Octagon Books Inc., 1964. — 370 p. — (Harvard Studies in Comparative Literature. Volume XII).
The part that France and Germany have played in the history of Russian culture has been investigated with some thoroughness, but comparatively little attention has been payed to the corresponding role of England. Although Russian scholars have long recognized the importance of England in the development of their country’s civilization, no comprehensive study of the subject has been made. In the present work, therefore, I have attempted to trace the history of English literature and culture in Russia from 1553 to 1840. The results of the study indicate that England’s influence in Russia during this period was of great consequence; and something is added, I hope, to the general knowledge of the far-flung dissemination of English literature and culture. In the bibliographies at the end of each chapter I have made no attempt to be definitive; the subject is altogether too vast for this. For practical purposes I have confined myself to selective bibliographies of the sources and studies chiefly used, and for the same reason I have arranged all the items chronologically. Occasionally I have borrowed from published articles of my own on various phases of the subject. In every case acknowledgments are made in the notes.
