Allegro marziale
'Improvisata' (Adagio, con molto espressione)
Moderato, maestoso
In the monumental Sonata Inaugurale Op. 9, it is remarkable that the writing is without a doubt simply that of a great pianist. But in the excessive multiplicity and density it expires to an almost unpianistic expansion. It is strongly reminiscent, as so much of Schäfer's music, of the piano music of Brahms and Scriabin.
The Sonata Inaugurale contains music composed in different years. As Schäfer himself said: "The Adagio from 1906 rests on a broad harmonic foundation with a sumptuous colouring and is filled with a sonorous sound. The moderato maestoso from 1911 has the same compact chordal setting that places high demands on the performance".
