The Italian composer Mario Tarenghi (1870-1938) was born in Bergamo, and studied at the conservatory there, as well as that of Milan, where his teachers included Alfredo Catalani (composer of 'La Wally'). He went on to teach piano and composition at his own private music school in Milan, where he died. Although he wrote two one-act operas, he is best known for his piano works, particularly his educational works. This piece comes from a set of four piano pieces, and is dedicated to Tarenghi's pupil Giovannina Fumagalli - presumably a descendant of the three brother-composers Fumagalli who were prominent in Italian musical life in the 19th century (one of them taught Tarenghi himself in Milan). The title of the piece translates as 'lady from Madrid' and the piece has a vaguely Spanish flavour.
