Perhaps the best-known English piano teacher of his era, Matthay (1858-1945) studied under Sterndale-Bennett and Sullivan, but went on to teach Arnold Bax, York Bowen, Myra Hess, Felix Swinstead, Harold Craxton and many other influential musicians. His own music, never populist in style, is now neglected, having been politely played by his pupils but put aside after his death.
