Butler Jonathan Lowell. Latin -īnus, -īna, -ĭnus and -ĭneus: from Proto-Indo-European to the Romance languages
Berkeley; Los Angeles; London: University of California Press, 1971. — 154 p. — (University of California publications in linguistics 68).
This study is, in a sense, an inverse representation of the investigation that preceded it. My original intent was to inquire into certain problems of Romance suffixal derivation, in particular those raised by Sardinian -indzu/-ingu and -inu/-inu. In analyzing these suffixes earlier investigators had relied almost exclusively on formal criteria, with the result that Sardinian -indzu/ - ingu, along with Spanish -eno and Italian -igno, was said to reflect Latin -ÏNEUS (while Catalan-Provençal-Northern Italian -enc was deemed a representative of Germanic -ing or of Ligurian -incu), and Sardinian -inu was declared the sole survivor of Lat. -INUS. Functional and distributional criteria, however, rendered suspect such proposed equations. In the second part of this study I show each to have been false.
