The first performance of this piece, of great technical virtuosity , took place on March 28, 1919 during a concert at the Salle Gaveau , performed by its dedicatee Blanche Selva . Jean Roger-Ducasse superimposes a five-beat measure in regular eighth notes, in two measures in three beats in the first bars of Rythmes , where the eighth notes become triplets — a strictly impossible operation according to Guy Sacre , who specifies how this "five-beat beat, its tambourine effects" and the legatissimo (very connected) playing indication make the performance perilous in order to preserve the charm of "a peaceful theme which strives to keep its three-beat pace
